Capital Wasteland

Me and the team's primary objective for this project was to recreate one of our favorite games of our childhood. In terms of level design our goal was to keep encounters relatively identical but touch up every aspect of its environmental design. It has been a blast redesigning area an bringing more beauty to the wasteland such as Minefield, Warrington and its surrounding wasteland, The Mall, and much more. This includes more realistic lighting, denser clutter and set dressing to enrich storytelling, additional visual effects and occasionally adjustments the encounter design. My skills at creating gorgeous environments that immerse the player and encourage their exploration has grown substantially.

Responsibilities:

  • Approximately 24 Exterior Cells

  • 13 Interiors, Appx. 24 Exterior Cells

  • Enviornmental Level Design (Layout, lighting, set dressing, clutter, SFX, FX, finalization)

  • Gameplay Level Design (Encounters, and navmesh)

Environmental Highlights

Minefield

Environment

The town Ridgefield, now properly named Minefield, was a quaint town. Once a place to play with your children and help thy neighbor now is a death trap. All that remains is several derelict wasteland homes, cracked roads, and abandoned park and mines hidden throughout the terrain. The post war inhabitants fell victim to malicious slavers except one boy, Arkansas. Pursuing acts of revenge he lured the slavers back and slaughtered them all with 308 calibers and land mines. Years later he remains, guarding the town from repeated history.

Minefield Benson House

Environment

This quaint, average wasteland home is now the dirty, dust filled tomb of scattered corpses of mole rats and drug addicted raiders. It's difficult to tell if the bandits succumbed to the violence of the mutated beats, or the corruption of the variety of drugs littered about.

Minefield Gibson House

Environment

This quiet home, previously owned by a member of the police force, ironically is now the location of  an extreme violent event. A viscous fight took place here, identified by the impaled and bloody bodies limp on the carpet floor adjacent to glass bottles and other garbage.

Minefield Zane House

Environment

Another warm lighted dirty wasteland home. Here a retired, crippled engineer/veteran and his family took drastic measures to avoid capture during the raid on Ridgefield. Instead of slavery, sweet death from poison was the solution.Was this the best choice? The house has laid dormant and undisturbed since.

Minefield Gillian House

Environment

The largest family of Ridgefield lived in this dusty old cottage. The mother, and avid painter, the father, a hunting enthusiast, child, and an infant, lived in fear during their final days in the apocalypse. Plenty of valuable loot to find here, just be mindful of the Radroaches.

Capital Wasteland

Environment

The tragic beauty of the arid, warm, barren Capital Wasteland cannot be praised enough. The orange hues envelope the abandoned homes, cars, corpses, overpasses, and towering structures left crumbling in time. The hazardous cesspools and the abundance of hostile mutated creatures keep any wanderer on edge. All of this solidifies the perfect balance this game provides, the balance of discovery, beauty, and terror.

Warrington Train Station Exterior

Environment

This abandoned rusty train yard stands still, petrified in the baking sun. A few small buildings shelter the clutter left by last station employees. A viscous battle took place here evident by the skeletons of soldiers and corpses of ghouls spread out across the train yard. An abundance of military equipment is ready for the picking, only if you can take on the viscous feral ghouls on the surface.

Warrington Train Station Interior

Environment

This destroyed, dusty, broken metro station is inhabited by around a dozen feral ghouls wandering the tunnels, looking for more unfortunate victims. The inhabitants lost the fight when defending their position as several corpses lay limp next to stammering feral ghouls, weapons and ammo scattered on the floors and the occasional armed land mine.

FF Radio Station Caches 1,2,3,4

Environment

This group of cool faintly lit interiors are dark, damp, and lost. Each untouched and undisturbed until the player tracks them through radio distress calls throughout the wasteland. Each full of valuable loot and a story to tell. Ranging from a secret Chinese military operation to a scared trapped employee that succumbed to despair and drank himself to death.

Lincoln Tents

Environment

These tents house the rest of the team of slavers that reside at the Lincoln Memorial. The clutter and set dressing in these tiny spaces express the personality or functions of each of its inhabitants.
